ECI Announces MLC Elections in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

Biennial Elections for Legislative Council Seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.Hyderabad/Amaravati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the notifications for the biennial elections for Legislative Council seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This election is set to take place on March 20, where members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in both Telugu states will elect five MLCs each.

Election Schedule and Key Dates

According to the schedule released by the ECI, candidates can file their nominations until March 10. Following this, the scrutiny of nominations will occur on March 11. Candidates wishing to withdraw their nominations must do so by March 13. With ten MLCs retiring on March 29, the stakes are high for both regions.

Retiring Members and Political Dynamics

In Telangana, the retiring MLCs include Mahmood Ali, Satyavathi Rathod, and Seri Subash Reddy from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), alongside Mallesham Yegge, who defected to Congress last year, and Mirza Riyazul Hassan Effendi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Current projections suggest that the ruling Congress party may secure three of the five available seats, with the remaining two likely going to the BRS.

The political landscape in Telangana is evolving, particularly after Congress regained power from the BRS in November 2023. The support from AIMIM, which holds seven seats, and the Congress ally CPI, which has one seat, will be crucial for Congress’s success in these elections.

In Andhra Pradesh, the scenario is equally competitive. Key figures such as Duvvarapu Rama Rao and Paruchuri Ashok Babu from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) are among those retiring. The TDP, part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is expected to perform strongly, given its significant majority in the 175-member Assembly. The coalition, which boasts 164 MLAs, is poised to win all five seats, with plans to allocate some to its allies, including the Jana Sena and BJP.

Aspirants and Party Strategies

Prominent aspirants from the NDA include actor Nagendra Babu, brother of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who is expected to be inducted into the Cabinet. The TDP is also considering nominations for leaders who previously withdrew from Assembly elections, reinforcing their commitment to their allies. For instance, SVSN Varma, who stepped down for Pawan Kalyan, might receive a nomination for the Legislative Council.

As the date for the biennial elections for Legislative Council seats in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh approaches, the political atmosphere is charged with anticipation. Voters and party leaders alike are preparing for what promises to be a pivotal moment in the political landscape of both states.
