Y. S. Sharmila, the President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress, recently criticized the state government for increasing Andhra Pradesh Fuel Taxes. This rise has resulted in petrol and diesel prices that are significantly higher than those in neighboring states. Currently, the price of petrol in Andhra Pradesh stands at Rs 109.6, while diesel costs Rs 97.4. In comparison, petrol in Tamil Nadu is priced at Rs 100.8, and diesel is available for Rs 92.3. The disparity in fuel costs raises concerns among the citizens of Andhra Pradesh.
Impact of Fuel Taxes on Citizens
Sharmila accused both the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) of exploiting the public with their fluctuating positions on fuel taxes. She emphasized that both parties have changed their stance based on whether they are in power or in opposition. Fuel prices in Andhra Pradesh are notably higher, with petrol priced Rs 7 per litre more and diesel Rs 9 per litre more than in Karnataka. Furthermore, petrol costs Rs 3 more than in Telangana. These elevated prices place a significant burden on the state’s residents.
Revenue Generated from Fuel Taxes
From 2014 to 2019, during N. Chandrababu Naidu’s first term as Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh collected Rs 20,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh Fuel Taxes. Under the current YSRCP government from 2019 to 2024, this amount increased to Rs 25,000 crore. Over the past decade, Andhra Pradesh has amassed a staggering Rs 50,000 crore from fuel taxes. This revenue highlights the financial implications of high fuel prices on the economy and public welfare.
Call for Action
Sharmila urged Naidu to fulfill his promise of reducing fuel prices. She reminded him that during his time in opposition, he had advocated for a Rs 17 per litre reduction in fuel prices. Such promises raise expectations, and the public now looks for accountability from their leaders.
