Manipur Shaken by Two Earthquakes, Magnitude 5.7 Recorded

On September 2023, Manipur Earthquakes shook the region, with two significant tremors reported. The first earthquake, registering a magnitude of 5.7, struck at 11:06 AM, sending ripples across the Northeast. This seismic activity was felt not only in Manipur but also in neighboring states like Assam and Meghalaya. According to officials from the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong, the epicenter of the 5.7 magnitude quake was located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district, at a depth of 110 km.

The First Earthquake: Magnitude 5.7

The initial earthquake was of considerable strength, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale. Its depth and location contributed to the widespread tremors felt across the region. Residents reported feeling the ground shake, prompting many to evacuate buildings and seek safety outdoors. The panic was palpable as people gathered in open areas, seeking reassurance from one another.

The Second Earthquake: Magnitude 4.1

Just over an hour later, a second quake struck Manipur, registering at a magnitude of 4.1. This earthquake hit the Kamjong district at 12:20 PM, with a depth of 66 km. Although this tremor was less intense, it added to the anxiety already felt by the residents following the first quake. Officials continue to monitor the situation and assess any damage that may have occurred.

Impact on the Region

The Manipur earthquakes have raised concerns about seismic activity in the region. Local authorities are advising residents to stay alert and prepared for any aftershocks. Historical data shows that the Northeast region of India is prone to earthquakes, making preparedness essential for residents.
