Telangana Irrigation Project Status: Current Developments

Hyderabad: The latest Telangana Irrigation Project Status reveals that the central government has rejected Telangana’s proposal to grant national project status to the Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme. This decision stems from the ongoing legal dispute between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh regarding the sharing of Krishna river water.

In a recent Lok Sabha session, Bhongir MP Chama Kiran Kumar Reddy inquired about the status of the proposal. Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, confirmed that the proposal had been returned to the Telangana government. He noted that the pending case in the Supreme Court and ongoing proceedings of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II made it unfeasible to consider the project’s techno-economic report at this time.

Importance of the Palamuru-Rangareddy Scheme

The Telangana Irrigation Project Status is crucial for the Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme, which aims to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of drought-prone districts in the state. The Telangana government initially submitted its request for national project status to the Central Water Commission in September 2022. However, in December 2024, the center formally returned the proposal, emphasizing that the Supreme Court case remains a significant hurdle.

This irrigation scheme is essential for enhancing agricultural productivity and securing water resources for local communities. The central government’s decision is likely to reignite discussions on water allocation between the two Telugu states, as the Krishna water dispute continues to linger.

Future Implications for Telangana

The rejection of the national project status may delay vital infrastructure projects in Telangana. It could also impact the state’s agricultural sector and overall water management strategies. The government must navigate these challenges while seeking alternative solutions to address the irrigation needs of its farmers.
